June 2017 – too high fee for the late return of the rented car

A consumer from Lithuania rented a car with additional insurance from a car rental company in Italy. Due to the accident on the road the consumer returned the rented car about 1.5 hours later than stated in the rental agreement. The car rental company charged additionally 125 EUR for the late return. The consumer turned to the car rental company couple times asking to reduce the charge as it was too high, but got only reply that the charge was calculated by the system and it will be maintained. The consumer could not solve the dispute with the car rental company by himself and turned to the European Consumer Centre in Lithuania. The complaint was shared with the European Consumer Centre in Italy, which turned to the car rental company and got a proposal to refund 84 EUR. Thanks to the cooperation of both centers, the consumer received part of the paid charge.
